About the VLC
The Virtual Learning Commons is a place to make connections and meet your fellow students. It's also a great place to find out how to be a successful student - how to do research, write A+ papers, hone your study skills and effectively manage your time so that you can get everything you need to do, done.
Every page of the Virtual Learning Commons has the menu along the left hand side that you can use in a traditional web way to go to the various areas of the site. What may be different to you, is the list of discussions that are in the centre of the home page. This list of discussions are generated by the Virtual Learning Commons based on discussion topics that you pick. You can check out existing discussions by clicking on one. You can also track that discussion by adding it a personal list of discussions and see who else at the University is tracking that discussion. You can also add your own comments on any discussions.Anyone can visit the Virtual Learning Commons and look at and read the pages. To interact with the site, to add comments, start a new discussion, update your profile or manage your contacts you will need to login with your UMnetID. Similarly, if you want to use the Online Writing Tutor, the Assignment Calendar, register for an event or view your personal calendar you will need to log in. One of the best ways to find content, postings, or discussions in the Virtual Learning Commons is to use the Search tool. It will find people, pages, comments - almost anything. If you have added a discussion and want to keep track of the comments people make you can bookmark a discussion's page or login and see all your tracked discussions listed in the right hand column. The main navigation scheme in the VLC is the list of current discussions. You can display them by most recently added, alphabetically, Top 20, randomly or by category Remember, the VLC is subject to the same rules of computer usage as any other UM computer system or service. If you are unclear what these rules are they are outlined in Policy 252: Footnotes
