Task Analysis

This "Task Analysis"Flash handout helps you see a large assignment as just a series of smaller, less overwhelming tasks. Using this handout can help you:

  • start your assignments earlier,
  • manage your time better and
  • feel like you're reaching your goals in completing assignments.

What will I be able to do after reading this handout?
  • Know who to ask to improve your understanding of the task.
  • Ask yourself key questions to define your goals in relation to the assignment.
  • Ask yourself key questions to assess the necessary resources for completing the assignment (time available, existing knowledge, research required).
  • Break an assignment into manageable steps with deadlines for each step.
When might I use this handout?
  • When you feel uncertain about how to start an assignment.
  • When you feel overwhelmed by an enormous task and think it is impossible to finish or even to start.
  • When you think some of the things you are doing seem unrelated to your goals.
