Talking to Professors
How Do I Talk to My Instructor? Most instructors at the U of M want to help their students learn in any way they can. Besides lectures and labs, instructors also hold regular office hours, answer email, and some even have posted websites, blogs, and listservs. Get to know your instructor. Visit your instructor during their regular office hours (listed on their syllabus) and talk to them about their research, your interest in their course, or any questions you have from the lecture or readings. Talking to your instructor will help them remember you if you ever need a recommendation, or if you need help with class work. What Are My Instructor's Expectations? The instructor will give you a syllabus at the beginning of the course. Most of the instructor's expectations and rules should be listed on this syllabus. Generally, instructors expect their students to try hard and be attentive in class. You are also expected to speak to your instructor as early as possible if you are having trouble, if you need an extension on a due date, or if you must miss a class. Footnotes
