How Do I Find a Book?

To find books, you will use the Library Catalogue. The Library Catalogue is online and is called BISON. BISON lists all the materials owned by the University of Manitoba Libraries, including books, journals, CDs, newspapers, atlases, photos, archives, and more.

You can search BISON by keyword, title, or author, as well as by other headings. In most cases, you should use keyword searches, unless you know the title or author of the work for which you are searching.

Steps to Finding Books

  1. To find books, go to the Libraries’ Home Page. Click on the Library Catalogue link in the left-hand navigation bar.
  2. Type in your keywords (search words) and click the Search button.
  3. BISON (Library Catalogue) will display the relevant titles listed chronologically from newest to oldest.
  4. Click on Full description to see details about the books and their locations. You should note:
    • Which library the book is in.
    • Where in the library the book is found.
    • If the book is signed out or on the shelf.
    • The call number of the book. Call numbers are located at the bottom right hand side of the record, above the shelving location.

How Do I Get Books From the Library

Almost all of our books, journals, and newspapers are located either online, or in the library on open stacks (bookshelves on different floors of the library). You walk to these stacks to find the books that you need. Books are arranged in ordered according to subject by call number. At the end of each bookshelf is a stacks sign to tell you the range of call numbers that are located on that bookshelf.

Some books and other items can be taken out of the library. Others, such as encyclopedias and dictionaries, cannot be borrowed. Each library has a circulation desk near the entrance. The people at this desk can help you determine if you can take a book or other resource home.

If you want to borrow a book, you can charge it out or check it out using your student ID Card. Books can only be taken out for a limited period of time. If you do not return library books or renew them within the time alloted, you may have to pay a fine.

Can I Borrow Books or Articles From Other Libraries?

If you hear about a book, journal article, or other item that the University of Manitoba Libraries does not own, it can be obtained through a service called Document Delivery. Through Document Delivery Services, the University of Manitoba Libraries will borrow requested items from a nearby library on your behalf.

Steps for Using Document Delivery:

  1. First, contact a librarian and ask them to help you search the University of Manitoba Libraries Online Catalogue, BISON, for the book.
You cannot request Document Delivery of anything the University of Manitoba Libraries already owns.
  2. Document Delivery uses a separate online system from the rest of the library. You must register with the Document Delivery System before you are able to use Document Delivery.

Your ID is usually your student ID number, and your password is usually the last four digits on your student ID number, by default.

If you have forgotten your ID or password, contact Document Delivery.
  3. Go to the Document Delivery Website. You can link to this site from the left menu of the Libraries' Main Page.
  4. Select the Patron Request Form. Fill out the form as described in the steps below.
    • Select a library where you would like to pick up the document.
    • Fill in the form with your ID and password. Remember that your Document Delivery ID and password may be different from other systems.
You will receive your ID and password when you register with Document Delivery. Your ID is usually your student ID number and your password is usually the last four digits on your student ID number, by default.
If you have forgotten your ID or password, contact Document Delivery.
    • Once you sign in, you will be directed to a form to describe the book or article that you would like to request. Be as specific as possible. Fill in the information and submit the form. You will receive a confirmation number.
