All Winnipeg businesses are listed in a large, free book produced by the local phone company (MTS) called the Yellow Pages. In the Yellow pages, businesses are listed by type rather than by name. These listings are also available online (see link on this page). Below are descriptions of common store types and the headings to find lists of these shops in the Yellow Pages.

Many products, such as food and soaps, will be packaged and used differently from what you are used to. Do not be afraid to ask the staff in the stores if you have questions about how to use a particular product, or even need to know where to buy certain items. If you are nervous, try explaining that you are new to Canada and are still learning; most stores will do anything they can to help you.

Food

Where Do I Buy Food?

Look in the Yellow Pages under the heading: Grocer

Food stores are usually called grocers or grocery stores. Some grocers are small and carry specialty items, while others are large and carry a wide variety of prepackaged, frozen, and fresh foods. Shops that sell imports include delicatessens, import markets, and ethnic markets. IGA, Real Canadian Superstore, Safeway, and Sobeys are the four major large grocery stores in Winnipeg, but there are many others.

Note that a free shuttle will take students to the grocery store on weekends. This service is organized by the Student's Union.

Clothes

Where Can I Find Clothes?

Look in the Yellow Pages under the heading: Shopping Centres

There are many large indoor shopping centres with a variety of stores inside, including many clothing stores and department stores.

Previously Owned

Where Can I Find Previously Owned Items?

Look in the Yellow Pages under the heading: Second Hand

Almost anything, including books, clothes, and furniture, can be bought for a minimal price from shops that sell items that other people previously owned. These shops are often called Second Hand Stores or Thrift Shops. Items sold in second hand shops are referred to as used items; for example, a store selling previously owned books might be called a Used Bookstore. You can also find items listed in the Classified section of local Winnipeg newspapers.

Transportation

Where Can I Buy a Car or a Bicycle?

For Cars: Look in the Yellow Pages under the heading:
Automobile Dlrs - New Cars, or
Automobile Dlrs - Used Cars

For Bicycles: Look in the Yellow Pages under the heading: bicycles - Dlrs

New cars, and newer used cars can be purchased from car dealerships, while new and used bicycles can be purchased from bicycle dealerships.

For older cars and bicycles (bikes), you can also look through the classified ads of the local newspaper. Many small newspapers are published for the specific purpose of buying and selling cars, bikes, and other items. The names of these publications often involve words like: car, auto, bargain, trade, used, etc.

Markets

Other Sales and Markets:

  1. Garage Sales and Yard Sales are not in the Yellow Pages, but they are a great place to get furniture and household items. During the summer, people sell items they no longer want along the side of the road outside of their houses or in their garages. They usually charge minimal prices, and will often negotiate the price with you. Garage sales tend to take place on weekends, and are sometimes advertised in the newspaper.
  2. Farmer's Markets usually only take place on weekends during the summer. At a Farmer's Market, local growers of fresh fruits, vegetables, and other foods gather in an outdoor market and sell their goods. Prices for these goods are usually cheaper than at other venues, such as grocery stores.
