To-Do Item: Raise Tuition Fees
  • Re: Hey there. Apr 17, 2007, 10:18 am

I'm tired of UMSU messing around where they shouldn't. I'm all for affordable tuition, but when the lack of funding starts to affect the quality of education, raising tuition should be seriously considered.

Demanding the freeze (or cheaper) regardless of how much funding is given by the government is greedy and makes it seem like you dont care about the value of your education.

Ask any student and they will tell you that the facilities and classes need improvement....

  • Re: Can i set up Thunderbird to check my UM email account? Feb 1, 2007, 5:01 pm

Yupper! The university offers both a POP3 and IMAP service for your email. The difference between POP3 and IMAP is that with POP3 it downloads the messages and stores them on the computer that you're using to read your email.

If you use IMAP, it keeps all of your email on the server so that you can view it from multiple computers and webmail without having to worry about which computer downloads your mail. The only disadvantage to using IMAP is that you have to worry about...

Didn't you see those two movies, Deep Impact and Armageddon? The solution is obviously to send up a crack oil drilling team and have them dig a hole and drop a nuke to split the big asteroid open.

Alternatively, we could start building a big underground shelter for our best scientists and a lottery selection of citizens to populate.

More seriously, I've heard recently that NASA is planning missions to test the feasibility of altering the course of an asteroid...

I don't watch alot of broadcast TV, but I do download most of the shows that I like to watch. What typically happens is that I'll forget about it for a couple weeks or a month and then I'll download like 10 episodes and I won't be able to not watch them all at once.

For instance, last weekend I rememberd this new sci-fi show that was coming out called Eureka, so I went online and downloaded the first 12 hour long epsiodes. Let's just say that by the end of the weekend I was looking for something else to watch. he he he....

It should be noted that the cafeteria in fishereis does not entirely serve fish. Very little fish, actually, only once a week (fridays usually?) do they have fish specials. They really have a good clubhouse sandwich special (not sure which day, I think it changes from week to week) that includes fries and coleslaw for < $5....

The new engineering building is supposed to have a green roof on certain sections. They were planning on putting up this super genetically modified grass that groes under absolutely any conditions and never needs to be watered fertilized or seeded.

Not sure if they ran out of money or not before reaching that part though. he he he

Maybe if we just got everybody on the day side of the earth to jump at precisely the same time, we could push the planet a bit farther...

Ok... I've tried to follow your instructions. But my stove didn't have some of the buttons and widgets that you seemed to be describing, so I sorta improvised.

My stove has a big round element (?), but there's water in the middle.. And there was no knobs, but this little thing that I could sorta move up and down.

I pushed it down so that it would pre-heat the element, and all of a sudden the water in the middle started going crazy.

We've learned a lot from our mistakes with regard to nuclear power.

Firstly, Chernobyl was a poorly designed reactor. They used treated water as a coolant, which has (I believe I have the term right) a positive void coefficient. What this means is that when it heats up beyond a certain temperature, bubbles can form. When a bubble forms on the threshold of the reactor and the coolant, that local area increases in temperature because there is no longer any coolant making...

I realize that. I don't personally refuse to change, but then again, I don't consider myself the "Average Joe". From what I've observed, people are willing to recognize the environmental impact of our ways, but are always looking to offload the responsibility to somebody else.

The average joe solution for global warming is to trade in their gas guzzling auto for a hybrid or electric car. While it can be debated whether or not this actually helps in the long...

Well, to get things a bit back on topic, earlier people were talking about romantic places around campus.

Can anybody actually list off a few? It would be interesting to find a place to take my girlfriend that neither of us have been to before. Note: Please list places that are significantly more private than the line at Tim Hortons, quieter than the "Wind-Tunnel" between Parker and Armes (that whining fan noise drives me nuts), and somewhere where asbestos doesn't rain down from every orifice in the walls and ceiling....

Nobody is saying that falling in love is something that can be planned, or scheduled. The purpose of this todo (from what I've read anyways), seems to be the discussion of romantic experience and places on campus that are good to *be* with someone (not neccessarily meet someone).

People who wan't to meet do not wan't to fall in love with eachother (although I'm not excluding the possibility entirely). If you think it's kind of weird discussing this online and it makes you...

I couldn't agree more. In the past couple years, the EITC complex wasn't done so us engineering students were forced to trek to the aforementioned college(s).

Step 2) Convince the public that global warming is actually occuring and that it is caused by man.

Step 3) Formulate a plan that can be implemented without the average joe having to change their lifestyle (The majority of people won't be willing to change the way they live).

Thanks to your feedback, we've made a couple changes.

First off, as suggested by Webmastera, we've added "Top 20" and "Alphabetical List" view options to the main page.

Next, as recommended by Crimson, the discussions now display only the latest 20 comments by default, making older posts viewable through a simple link at the top and bottom of the thread.

Thanks for your suggestions, and we'll continue to monitor this thread for ideas to improve the VLC!...

    Hey folks,

If you're looking for a place to hang out in EITC, swing by IEEE. We're in room E1-514 (you can take the elevator by the front up or go up to the 5th floor from the E3 or E2 elevators).

We have a great place and a great bunch of people. Currently we are just getting settled back in so our lab isn't quite operational yet, but aside from that we've got couches, videogames, computers (w/ printer), a canteen (well stocked and reasonable prices), coffee, etc..

Well, we could list categories, but that does add another level of complexity to the site that may or may not be welcomed. For instance, what kind of categories do we start with? How are new categories created? Do we allow users to put a To-Do into their own category? If so, what do we do about mis-categorized To-Do's?

I think in the long run the categories would just make things more complex, but I like the idea of being able to sort by different factors like popularity,...

    Hello People,

Thanks for the positive feedback. I'm the programmer who wrote the VLC over the summer. I'd have to agree the spell checker really sucks right now.

Currently, it's got a massive dictionary file coded into a binary tree. To find suggestions, it simply grabs the closest nodes in the tree, which really doesn't work. I've got a better version that uses a decent open source spellcheck library, and we're working on getting that library installed on the production server....
