I'm in the Air Force and am currently attending U of M full-time in first year Comp Sci on a military scholarship. I'm also new to Winnipeg and would like to meet other people outside of the military, especially people around my age, but I'd love to make friends of all ages.

To-Do Item: connect with other 'mature' students
  • Re: minimum age requirement? Feb 28, 2008, 12:16 pm

Officially, I think U of M considers a mature student as anyone older than 21, for the purposes of admission. However I think one could argur for the purpose of this discussion that if you feel you are significantly older than the rest of your classmates, you are a "mature student".

Then again, as was pointed out earlier...the term "mature" is used loosely Tongue Out...

To-Do Item: Turn up the heat in the Icelandic Reading Room
  • What do you expect? Nov 10, 2007, 2:24 pm
It IS the Icelandic reading room, after all!...

Well sounds good, then. How about we put in a reservation for "Young"? Get it? LOL. As in, we're not? Open Smile...

To-Do Item: I want to know if anyone knows of any GPA Booster courses, or any easy science courses for the M requirement.

I think, Friday, that you yourself are missing a point, if not THE point. I agree that everyone should apply themselves to ther full potential, lest they be cheating themselves. But let's face it. When it comes down to it, many employers just use degrees as a filter mechanism for hiring applicants.

Is it in a person's best interest to coast through school? No, the idea behind higher education is to develop and stimulate critical thinking and problem solving skills to prepare oneself...

  • STAT 1000 Oct 1, 2007, 1:51 pm
I think with STAT 1000, its conceptual. It's different from "regular" math, so it can seem difficult, or easy depending on whether you get it. I'm taking it with Brad Johnson and I find the hard part is dealing with JMP. I also go to Grant's and I find he makes things MUCH clearer than the prof does in class....

  • So... Sep 30, 2007, 12:38 pm
Well I hope everyone is settled into their studies for this semester. Now are we going to get together before the mid term rush? During the day seems difficult due to the crowdedness (is that a word?), so off campus may be an idea. I've always liked Margarita Monday's at Earl's, but I'm easy going, I'll try anything twice. Haven't had much opportunity to hang out with anyone at school....

To-Do Item: learn to dance in the club

Lets not forget the running man, and of corse, the funky chicken... Tongue Out...

  • Re: Allrighty then... Sep 21, 2007, 5:19 pm

Well, math doesn't REALLY suck, I've just struggled with it my entire academic life. I actually enjoy the challenge sometimes. It's kind of inevitable that it would catch up with me given my profession....

  • Allrighty then... Sep 18, 2007, 9:42 pm
I don't know how many people are following this thread...only the 3 of us since this September have posted. I think using MSN, email or even Facebook might be better. Anyway, lunch is good for me...just say when.

MissKristin, too bad about Math Skills...I think you were in my class. I dropped MATH 1500 to catch up...math sucks. Kinda glad I didn't go engineering......

  • Re: Okay, so let's hang out then! Sep 15, 2007, 4:25 pm

Yeah, me too...you wouldn't happen to be in Math Skills, would you?

Thursdays aren't great, either, as I have Grant's tutoring for STAT 1000 from 6:30-9:30.

After 9 on Wednesday would be good though, I guess, since I'll be at school anyway....

  • "mature" is such an ugly word Sep 14, 2007, 8:12 pm
I know what you mean. I'm in 1st year computer science (NOT U1) and I feel ancient. Granted there are others older than me in all my classes, but I don't think I'm OLD at 27...and I don't want to be "mature" if I don't have to, either!

What makes it easier for the "younger" crowd is that most of their friends from high school are all here with them. For me, I don't know anyone in my classes and like you said, it's hard to make friends in class without looking like...
