Cornelius Wiebe, who graduated in
medicine in 1925 and who practised in Winkler from his graduation until
his retirement was named a member of the Order of Canada for his
dedication to health care, which included the establishment of a clinic
and a centre to provide education and employment to those with mental
disabilities. At age 106 he was the oldest Canadian to be so honoured.
Governor-General Romeo LeBlanc traveled to Winkler to confer the honour in
May. Wiebe died in July, 1999.
