CHARACTER OF THE JOB

The Senior Glassblower, working under General Direction, is responsible for the smooth operation of the Glass Shop including: establishing priorities and maintaining stock and equipment.

In addition, positions at this level will provide specialist services to the University through the implementation of a highly skilled craft technology.

The work involves contact with academics, technicians and graduate students.

The Senior Glassblower is expected independently to plan and organize the daily work and most functions of the shop, however, general supervision is available in administrative matters.

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Repairs, constructs and frequently designs and modifies glass apparatus used in teaching and research.
  • Notifies the supervisor of any new equipment or supplies required in the glass shop.
  • Maintains an adequate inventory of stock and equipment and submits purchase requisitions as required.
  • Is responsible for personal updating in current glassblowing techniques.
  • Is required to obtain knowledge of and comply with safety policies applicable to the workplace.
  • Performs other related duties as required or assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED

The minimum qualifications necessary for acceptable (satisfactory) job performance are:

Level of Formal Education

Training equivalent to journeyman craft status plus five years directly-related scientific glassblowing experience.

Experience

An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Skills and Abilities

  • Initiative and ability to work independently and communicate effectively with other staff and students.
  • A high degree of manual dexterity.
  • Ability to plan, organize and administer projects.

Physical Requirements

Capable of performing the duties as assigned.
