Eligibility

 

Eligible staff members (full-time and part-time) may participate in the Pension Plan on their first day of employment provided that the employee completes an enrolment form and files the same with the Staff Benefits Office. Membership will be effective on the first day of the pay cycle next following receipt of the enrolment form. For full-time staff members the mandatory participation date is within 30 days, following two years of employment. For part-time employees the mandatory participation date is within 30 days, following two consecutive years of employment where the earnings of the part-time staff member are in excess of 35% of the Canada Pension Plan Yearly Maximum Pensionable Earnings (YMPE).

The contribution rate is based on the following formula:

 Basic Salary up to the Yearly Basic Exemption

 8.00%

 9.00%

 Basic Salary between YBE and YMPE

 6.20%

 7.20%

 Basic Salary over the YMPE

 8.00%

 9.00%

The University of Manitoba matches the employee contribution. Each member will have a Members Contribution Account and a University Contribution Account.

Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) determines the maximum annual contribution that can be made to the Pension Plan. The maximum limit is $21,890 for 2012 in accordance with the limits defined under the Plan.
