Professor McKillop teaches history at Carleton University. He is interested in the process of Canadian thought and has written other works on the subject, including Disciplined Intelligence: Critical Inquiry and Canadian Thought in the Victorian Era. He is particularly involved in pursuing the development of thought among Canada's English-Canadian intellectuals, and he explores the responses of these intellectuals to philosophical thought processes, including the social and ethical implications of Darwinism. Through the early influence of scholars such as Daniel Wilson (University of Toronto) and John Watson (Queen's University), many of these philosophical responses and initiatives determined the development of Canadian universities.

This selection of essays is directed specifically to university students in order to introduce them to "the small but lively field of Canadian intellectual history." Most of the pieces in this book were originally given as invited occasional addresses and/or appeared in academic journals.

Because of the scholarly nature of the essays, this book should be purchased for libraries in post-secondary institutions. However, some history teachers in secondary schools would find the subject matter interesting and worthy of discussion with students who are planning to take university courses in history or philosophy. Introduction of this material is particularly appropriate at a time when many university students throughout North America are showing an intense interest in courses in intellectual history.
