Treasures is more than a description of Ottawa's Canadian Museum of Civilization and its artefacts. This book is a paean to the treasures of Canadian civilization in all its diversity. Representative samples from native peoples, Nordic settlements, the French and English, and other immigrant cultures are contained in this handsome book.

It is a monumental, if not impossible, task to portray the vast richness of the natural collection in only a few photographs. Only five per cent of the museum's two million objects are on display, and these are represented by one hundred photographs and/or illustrations. The editors and the curators have done an admirable job; their selections for the book give the essential flavour of the diversity of Canadian culture and civilization.

The photo reproduction of artefacts is uniformly excellent. Each of these museum pieces is accompanied by a short descriptive text in both English and French. Type-face, layout, and organization are superb. Photo illustrations are in full colour. A catalogue of artefacts illustrated is appended to the text. There is a table of contents, but no index.

Treasures is a striking coffee-table book intended for general audiences. I can see its usefulness at the secondary level in schools where history, art, social studies, native studies, and French classes could use this book as a resource.

This book details the contribution that the Canadian Museum of Civilization makes to the unravelling of what it means to have a Canadian culture. In the words of Jeanne Sauve, "From now on, it will be easier to see the innovations and progress of the living culture in the continuity of our tradition."
