Alternatively, if you are starting Mail for the first time you will be automatically prompted with the same wizard. Enter your account information for the U of M Exchange email server:

  • Type your name as you wish others to see it
  • Type your U of M email address (which should be in the form firstname.lastname@umanitoba.ca )
  • Type your password for the U of M Exchange email server

Click Continue

After a brief wait, the window will display a small error message on the bottom of the screen. A new field called User Name: will be highlighted with a white arrow in a red circle. Correct the user name by typing "ad\" followed by your UMnetID (for example, "AD\smithj") in the box instead, completely replacing the automatically filled username.

Click Continue. The program will again display a message that it is checking the connection to the server. This step may take several minutes.

When autodetection of the server is finished, you will see an Account Summary with the detected information. Be sure to select the checkboxes for both Contacts and Calendars to be set up as well, then click on Create.

Mac Mail is now set up and configured. However, the first time you send an email message you will likely receive an error after you type in the recipient’s email address. The error will read "Address Book can’t verify the identity of the server". To fix this error, click on Show Certificate
