Horticulture (Subsistence Cultivation)
Basic subsistence characteristics
Farmers do not make heavy labour commitments or expenditures
to create capital items such as irrigation works
Cultivation strategies are designed to maximize the use of
unmodified natural resources
Basic plot patterns are designed to replicate rather than
restructure the natural environment and involve techniques of polyculture,
or intercropping of complementary plants.
Lengthy fallow periods are imposed to re-establish soil fertility
after short periods of cultivation.
Yields per acre are relatively low.
