Marriage Exchanges

Exchange marriage - two families undertake several interrelated marriages between their members, i.e. two brothers marry each other's sisters.

Cross cousin marriage - Depending upon the specific cross cousin rule two or more lineages become  permanently linked through intermarriage.

Bride wealth payments - women are exchanged for special wealth items, such as cattle. Payments are held by the bride's family in recognition of the marriage or are used in turn to obtain wifes for the men of the bride's family.

Levirate - A woman remarries within her husband's family after his death, maintain the link between the two families which contracted the original marriage.
