Victorian literature and culture; class and gender in Victorian culture; the nineteenth–century novel; nineteenth–century women writers; women and professions in the nineteenth century; literature and affect; George Gissing; Charles Dickens.

  • Director, The Affect Project
  • Victorian nursing (it’s more interesting than you think!)
  • Victorian hospital organisation and management
  • Victorian lady detectives (real and fictional)
  • Jack the Ripper and Victorian crime
  • Editing: I have edited editions of George Gissing’s The Odd Women and Tom Gallon’s The Girl Behind the Keys.
  • I am currently completing a major project on middle–class women and work in Victorian literature and culture.
