Highlights

  • Dean Emeritus at the University of Manitoba and Senior Scholar.  Graduating from Fordham University, New York (1973) in sociology, he returned to Winnipeg where he served as department head (1979-84) and dean of Arts at the University of Manitoba (1991-99).
  • Founded the Winnipeg Area Study (1981) and was Director for its first 10 years.
  • He was Executive Director of the Canadian Research Data Centre Network (2002-09). He led grant applications to obtain $25M from SSHRC, CIHR and CFI.
  • Presented workshops on academic leadership to Deans and Chairs, or evaluated academic programs at 15 Universities across Canada.
  • His autobiography Secure and Uncertain: A Father’s Story, Winnipeg, Anderson Press, 2008.

  • 2012, Honorary Doctorate in Laws, McMaster University;
  • 2010 Lise Manchester award, The Statistical Society of Canada. (“The award recognizes excellence in statistical research which … is potentially useful for formation of Canadian public policy”);
  • 2002 Queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee Award;
  • 1999 The Peter D. Curry Chancellor’s Award (“for individuals who have made distinct contributions to University governance and/or development”);
  • 1994 CAUBO national  "Innovation in Management" Award; 
  • 1994 The University of Manitoba Faculty Association "Administrator of the Year" Award;
  • 1994 Canadian Sociology and Anthropology Association “Outstanding Contribution Award."

Current Research and Community Service

  • Since 2015, in partnership with Indigenous peoples, Project Coordinator of “Circles for Reconciliation,” (www.circlesforreconciliation.ca)  with the goal of creating 100 grassroots discussion groups of 10 people each, involving Indigenous and non-indigenous persons in Winnipeg. Expanded nationally in 2018.
  • Extensive media coverage (CBC national radio; CTV, NCI, etc.) 
  • Grants of $153,000 in support of the project from Canadian Heritage 150, The Winnipeg Foundation and The Toronto Foundation.
  • Conference Presentations on Circles for Reconciliation
    • Pathways to Reconciliation Conference, May, 2016, University of Winnipeg (Publication forthcoming) (With Ko’ona Cochrane)
    • National Canadian Conference on Counselling and psychotherapy, May, 2018, Winnipeg (with Clayton Sandy)
    • Presentations on the project to over 30 organizations in Winnipeg, Toronto, Thunder Bay, and Victoria.
  • As of May, 2018, 400 people have engaged in 4,000 hours of discussions on reconciliation in Manitoba through Circles for Reconciliation.
