Earth Observation Science has emerged as a scientific discipline, due to the development of sophisticated technologies such as remote sensing, geographic information systems (GIS), global positioning systems (GPS), database management systems, and digital mapping.  It aims to improve our understanding of the complex interrelationships between humans and the Earth's physical, biological, and biogeochemical systems.
