Title: Dian Cohen fonds.

Dates: 1948-2003.

Extent: 11.2 m of textual records and other material.

Biographical sketch: Dian Cohen (nee Nusgart) was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1932. Before attending the University of Toronto, where she received a Bachelor of Arts in 1956 in Economic History and Political Science, Cohen worked in London, England as a foreign exchange clerk. She furthered her education at McGill University where she studied Banking, Public Policy, and Econometrics until 1963. Cohen then embarked on a long career as an economics commentator on television and radio, first with the CBC and then with CTV. In 1968 she commenced a long-term position as a syndicated newspaper and magazine columnist on personal money management, economic, and business affairs. Cohen would later publish several popular books on economic matters. She parlayed her talent of making economics understandable to the general public into a successful career as an educator on several academic radio programs and as an economics consultant and public speaker. Cohen also volunteered her time to several organizations, serving on numerous boards often as Director. Cohen's talents have been recognized over the years with the many awards and recognitions she has received including the Order of Canada in 1993.

Custodial history: The material in the fonds was donated to University of Manitoba Archives & Special Collections by Dian Cohen in 1997 and 2004.

Scope and content: The fonds consists of 11.2 m of textual records divided into eight series and fifteen sub-series. The eight major series of the fonds are personal information, academic career material, correspondence, research, writings, radio and television work, consulting work, and miscellaneous material. In addition, there are 111 computer diskettes (5 1/4" and 3 1/2" floppies), 359 audio cassettes, 1 reel-to-reel audio tape, 197 video cassettes, 1 film reel, 33 photographs, 13 slides, and 1 negative comprising the photograph, tape, and electronic records collections.
