Title: W.J. Waines fonds

Dates: 1924-1973

Extent: 36 cm of textual records. -- 1 audio cassette

Biographical Sketch: William John Waines was born at Moosomin, Saskatchewan in 1901, where his father had homesteaded. He graduated from the University of Manitoba with a B.A. in 1924, and an M.A. in 1925, receiving Gold Medals in Economics. He did post graduate work at Northwestern University and the University of Chicago. He lectured at Lake Forest College in Illinois for 1927-1928 before returning to the University of Manitoba in 1928. Waines was appointed Assistant Professor in 1937 and made Professor and Head of the Department of Political Economy in 1941. In 1947 he became the Vice President (academic) of the University of Manitoba, but left the position in 1966 he left to accept the appointment of Association Director of the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada. Waines served on numerous boards, commissions, consultations, and public inquiries including the Rowell-Sirois Commission. The University of Manitoba honoured him in 1966 with the appointment as Dean Emeritus, Faculty of Arts and Science, and again in 1967 when he was awarded an honourary Doctor of Law. His wife Do was a strong support throughout his career.

Custodial History: MSS 114 was acquired in 1985 and MSS SC 58 and TC 15 were donated to the University of Manitoba Archives & Special Collections in June 1979 by Mrs. H. Pentland.

Scope and Content: The fonds consists of correspondence, thesis, citations, speeches and addresses, pamphlets, publications, articles and reports. TC 15 consists of an original cassette audio recording of Waine's speech "University of Manitoba Presidents I have Known: Recollections and Impressions".
