Title: Elinor F. Black fonds.

Dates: 1941-1971.

Extent: 0.13 m of textual records.

Biographical sketch: Elinor Black was born in 1905. She graduated from medical school at the University of Manitoba in 1930. In 1951, she became Head, Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Winnipeg General Hospital, a post she held for thirteen years. She was elected to the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists in 1950. She was the first woman in Canada to head a major clinical department.

Custodial history: The fonds was donated to University of Manitoba Archives & Special Collections by Dr. Elinor Black in 1978.

Scope and content: The collection consists of correspondence regarding gynaecology in general, the history of the University of Manitoba Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, and proposals regarding the same department at Winnipeg General Hospital.
