Summer programs
B.Sc. Med Program
The B.Sc. Med Program offers undergraduate medical students the opportunity to engage in two summer terms of research, providing students with the chance to review posted abstracts from potential supervisors or pursue their own projects. Additionally, travel awards, prizes, and scholarships are available for outstanding B.Sc. Med students and projects addressing specific research topics.
Duration:
Two summer terms, each lasting between 12 to 13 weeks.

University of Manitoba
Cost and payment information:
Students receive a stipend of $7500 per summer term, inclusive of a two-week vacation period. There are no additional fees for participation.
Credit:
Appears as B.Sc. Med on your transcript and is noted on your Medical Student Performance Record (MSPR).
How to apply:
Submit research applications online, jointly with your supervisor, by December 3rd of the preceding year.

Diabetes Canada Camp Briardale
Diabetes Canada Camp Briardale provides 24/7 supervision for children with Type 1 diabetes in a camp atmosphere. Participants engage in insulin dosage and level monitoring while actively participating in and supervising camp activities. This program offers a unique opportunity for students to gain hands-on experience in managing diabetes in a supportive environment.

Duration varies depending on the camp session.

Diabetes Canada Camp Briardale, location specifics available upon acceptance.

Credit:
Students who are pre-approved and successfully registered in both the Early Exposure program and accepted by the Diabetes Camp will have a Summer Session course indicated on their transcript. This experience will also be noted on their Medical Student Performance Record (MSPR).

IFMSA Student Exchange Program
The IFMSA Student Exchange Program, facilitated by the International Federation of Medical Students' Associations, offers medical students the opportunity to explore healthcare delivery and systems in diverse cultural and social settings worldwide. Participants spend four weeks to one year studying and experiencing healthcare systems, cultures, and medical practices in foreign countries. This program provides valuable clinical experience, exposes students to different healthcare delivery models, and fosters international understanding and cooperation among medical students.
Duration:
Typically ranges from four weeks to one year.
Location:
Various countries worldwide, coordinated through IFMSA member organizations.
Cost and payment information:
There is a multi-step application process through CFMS Global Health and IFMSA, with registration fees paid once the exchange country is awarded. Early Exposure program registration is required for malpractice/liability insurance coverage and credit on the MSPR. Students are responsible for Early Exposure fees before their flight.
Credit:
Participation appears as a Summer Session course on your transcript and is noted on your MSPR as an Early Exposure with overseas experience in the area you were exposed to.

Complete the multi-step application process through CFMS Global Health and IFMSA. Ensure Early Exposure program registration for insurance coverage and credit on the Medical Student Performance Record (MSPR).
Manitoba Health Care Provider Network Home for the Summer
The Manitoba Health Care Provider Network Home for the Summer program offers medical students the opportunity to gain rural and northern healthcare experience in Manitoba during the summer months.
Duration:
Summer months.
Location:
Rural and northern communities in Manitoba.
Cost and payment information:
The program covers Early Exposure registration costs, accommodation expenses for students without community connections, and pays an hourly wage of $20. Insurance and accommodation costs are covered by the program.
Credit:
Appears as a Summer Session course on your transcript and is noted on your Medical Student Performance Record (MSPR)as a Home for the Summer Early Exposure in rural Family Medicine.
How to apply:
Complete the application form and submit it by the end of January. Final placements are confirmed by the end of March.

Ongomiizwin Health Services Summer Early Exposure Electives
Organized by Ongomiizwin Health Services (OHS), this program provides participants with hands-on experience in Family Medicine, along with community and cultural immersion opportunities. Accommodations and air travel to assigned communities are arranged by OHS.

Summer Early Exposure Program
The Summer Early Exposure Program offers undergraduate medical students the opportunity to gain clinical experience across various medical fields. You'll have the chance to immerse yourself in different healthcare settings, from rural to urban, even overseas. By participating, you'll complete a minimum of 80 hours under the supervision of experienced professionals, submitting required evaluations for each experience.
Duration:
Flexible scheduling allows for multiple clinical experiences throughout the summer.
Location:
Various locations available, including rural, northern, urban, and international settings.
Cost and payment information:
A registration fee, approximately $140.00, covers required liability and malpractice insurance for the entire summer, regardless of the number of exposures. Payment can be made through Aurora Student online or via telephone banking.
Credit:
Appears as a Summer Session course on your transcript and is noted on your Medical Student Performance Record (MSPR) for each exposure length and type as designated in your application.
How to apply:
Submit application forms for pre-approval to the Electives Administrator at the UGME Office at least two weeks prior to the start date of your clinical experience. Ensure you secure a supervisor and arrange dates with administrative personnel in the department of your chosen experience.

Summer Research Program
The Summer Research Program aims to enhance student skills in critical data evaluation, effective result communication, experimental design, and hypothesis testing. While it does not confer a degree, completion of the program is recorded on your transcript. Annually, a call for applications is circulated to medical students, including abstracts from potential supervisors. Upon securing a supervisor, applicants must prepare a research proposal, abstract, and student role document as part of the application process.
Duration:
The program runs for approximately 12 weeks during the summer recess between either year one and two OR year two and three of medical training, depending on program allowances. This is a full-time program with a two-week paid vacation.
Location:
Students may conduct research at their chosen location, typically within the university or affiliated research facilities.
Cost and payment information:
All students receive stipendiary support, presently $7,500 for the summer, paid directly via direct deposit. Accepted students must submit a direct deposit form to payroll upon acceptance into the program.
Credit:
Completion of the program is recorded on your transcript as a non-degree course.
How to apply:
Complete the required documents, including a research proposal, abstract, and student role document, and submit them as per the application guidelines.

WISH Clinic
The WISH Clinic offers students the opportunity to volunteer at a student-run health clinic, engaging in various roles to support community healthcare.
Volunteers develop essential skills such as collaboration, communication, client interviewing, health administration, and policy development. Additionally, students have the chance to join the WISH Clinic Student Executive Council.
The clinic plays a vital role in extending community clinic hours to provide after-hours care. Interprofessional collaboration is emphasized, allowing students to work alongside peers from various disciplines.
Duration:
Volunteers commit to 4.5-hour shifts on Sunday afternoons from September to mid-June.
Location:
WISH Clinic at Mount Carmel Clinic, located at 886 Main Street, Winnipeg, MB R2W 5L4.
Cost and payment information:
Volunteering at the WISH Clinic is unpaid.
Credit:
Participation in the WISH Clinic is noted on your Medical Student Performance Record (MSPR) and included as "Community Service" on your student transcript and co-curricular record. Involvement can also be highlighted on your personal CV for CaRMS and may count towards service learning hours for relevant courses.

Electives in undergraduate medical education serve as invaluable opportunities for students to explore diverse medical specialties and subspecialties, facilitating informed decisions about their career paths. Max Rady College of Medicine accepts a limited number of visiting medical students enrolled in medical schools other than the University of Manitoba for short periods of elective study.
