Home/Body/Metaphor

Family history. The act of measurement. Embracing change. Anatomical drawings on the delicate tissue of fragile paper sewing patterns.

Retired professional interior designer, Janet Shaw-Russell, will show how each of these guided her path to becoming a visual artist and inspired her exploration of social, medical, and feminist issues as she uses home and the body as metaphor.

About Janet Shaw-Russell

Since retiring from her professional interior design career (B.I.D., U of M,1978), Janet Shaw-Russell’s multi-media art practice has garnered her support from the Canada Council and the Manitoba Arts Council.

In her studio, Janet embraces the Renaissance tradition of anatomical drawing, examines printmaking processes and molds torn sewing pattern tissue into vessels.

She forged an artistic association with Brandon University’s Anthropology Department and engages in botanical workshops at the University of Manitoba’s Vascular Plant Herbarium.

For over a year, she was immersed in a learning partnership with U of M neuroscientist, Dr. Geoffrey Hicks who researches FASD (fetal alcohol spectrum disorder).

Her works have been exhibited at the Art Gallery of Southwestern Manitoba, St. Boniface Hospital’s Buhler Gallery, Canadian Mennonite University’s MHC Gallery, the Estevan Art Gallery and Museum and were featured in Galleries West Magazine.
