Summer Studio 2024

In partnership with the European Culture Academy, this course will offer students an opportunity to explore biologically inspired design and biomaterials as a means to address current global environmental issues. Students will participate in lectures, hands-on work, and field studies to acquire an introductory level understanding of theories, methods and tools currently used in biomimetic design. Participants will work individually and collaboratively to develop a series of biomimetic designs and prototypes that will tackle Venice’s specific challenges in the context of a changing climate. Venice history, architecture, urban fabric, as well as its natural and man-made ecosystems will inform design questions and potential biologically inspired responses. Students will be asked to move away from their disciplinary comfort zones and critically engage with transdisciplinary theories and tools to explore and integrate lessons learned from Nature.
