uofm-wpa secure wireless setup for Windows XP

This document is meant to help you configure a connection to the uofm-wpa secure wireless network, using Windows XP.

To Configure

1. Click Start, click Control Panel, locate Network Connections (you may have to click Switch to Classic View first, to find it) and double-click the icon.  
2. Right-click the Wireless Connection icon and click Properties.
 
3.  Click the Wireless Networks tab  
   
4. Ensure there is a checkmark in the box for Use Windows to configure...  
5.  If white space (beneath Prefered Networks) contains uofm-wpa select it and click Properties, and if not, click Add
6. Make the following changes in the Association tab:
  • Network Name (SSID): uofm-wpa
  • Network Authentication: WPA2
  • Data encryption: AES (recommended) or TKIP
  • Ensure there is NO checkmark in the box for This is a computer-to-computer...






    Click the Connection tab and ensure there is a checkmark in the box for Connect when this network is in range

       
    7. Make the following changes in the Authentication tab
  • Choose the EAP type: Protected EAP (PEAP)
  • Ensure there is NO checkmark in the box for Authenticate as computer...
  • Ensure there is NO checkmark in the box for Authenticate as guest...
       
    8.  Click Properties
     
  • In the Trusted Root Certification Authorities box, place a checkmark beside Thawte Premium Server CA
     
  • Ensure that Secured password (EAP-MSCHAP v2) is selected as the authentication method

    9.  Click Configure
     
  • Remove the checkmark from the box Automatically use my Windows logon...
     
    10.  Click OK until all of the wireless setting screens are closed.
    Upon trying to connect to the uofm-wpa network, you should get a bubble as shown below. Click on it.
     
     
    11.  Enter your UMnetID and password to login. The logon domain should remain blank.
    12.  You should now be connected to the uofm-wpa secured wireless network with access to the Internet
