Outlook Express Instructions for Windows (IMAP)

Basic Settings

Click on Tools and Accounts...

The Internet Accounts window is now open. Click on the Mail tab. Click Add and click Mail...

Enter your name as you would like your recepients to see it. Click Next.

Enter your email address. Click Next.

Choose IMAP from the dropdown menu. For both incoming and outgoing mail servers, enter mail.cc.umanitoba.ca. Click Next.

Enter your UMnetID in the field for Account name. It is recommended that users do not choose to fill in the checkbox for Remember password. Also, make sure the checkbox for Log on using SPA is empty. Click Next.

Click Finish.


LDAP (Lightweight Directory Access Protocol)
Configuring an email client to use the UofM LDAP server provides quick and easy access to UofM student and employee email addresses.

Click on Tools and Accounts...

The Internet Accounts window is now open. Click on the Directory Service tab. Click Add and click Directory Service...

Enter direct.cc.umanitoba.ca in the space provided. Click Next.

To have Outlook Express use LDAP to check the email addresses of all a message's recipients select Yes, otherwise choose No. Click Next. Click Finish.

In the Interent Accounts window, select the directory service you just created, called direct.cc.umanitoba.ca, and click on Properties. Click on the Advanced tab.

In the section for Search base, enter o=University of Manitoba,c=ca exactly as it is writen here. Click OK.

Click Close.


Alternate Port Settings (Outgoing only)
The email client may need to be configured to access the outgoing mail server using an alternate port. This needs to be done if your are using MTS as your ISP and need to send email using the UofM outgoing mail server.

Click on Tools and Accounts...

The Internet Accounts window is now open. Click on the Mail tab. Select the email account that has been configured for the UofM and click Properties. Click on the Servers tab. Fill in the checkbox for My server requires authentication. Click Settings.

Ensure that Use same settings as my incoming mail server is selected and click OK.

Click the Advanced tab. Fill in the checkbox directly beneath Outgoing mail (SMTP) for This server requires a secure connection (SSL). Change the port from 25 to 587 (or 465).

Click OK. Click Close.
