Soils - a collection of natural bodies on the earth's surface capable of supporting plant life and with properties due to the integral effects of climate and living matter actingon parent material as conditioned by relief over periods of time. Pedology - the study of soils as they relate to the environment in which they occur; the study of soil as an object of nature. Pedology (also known as soil science) can be subdivided into specific fields of study, including:
The Society meets annually for a two-day scientific meeting and Annual General Meeting, and a field trip varying in length from 1 to 2 days. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
SECOND CALL FOR PAPERS The Society meets annually throughout a two-day conference to discuss topics pertaining to all aspects of soil science. Certified Crop Advisor Credits will be applied for. Please submit abstracts by December 14, 2009 to msss@cc.umanitoba.ca. Abstracts will not be accepted after this date. Abstracts of less than 300 words are to include title, authors, and affiliations. Make sure you state your rationale, objectives, methods, results and impact of the study. Abstracts will be published in the conference booklet. If you have missed the deadline for papers to the International Congress of Soil Science, don't kick yourself for missing this call for abstracts! Unlike the World Congress, we don't extend deadlines.

The Manitoba Soil Science Society is a proponate of officially designating the Newdale Soil as the Provincial Soil of Manitoba. Soil is one of our most valuable natural resources. To ensure that we do not take this resource for granted, soils need to be protected and managed in a sustainable manner. Designation and proclamation of a Provincial Soil is one way to increase public awareness and create a greater appreciation for soils.
