Dr. Racz's
training includes a B.Sc. in agriculture (major soil science)
and M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees with specialization in soil chemistry
and inorganic chemistry.
Dr. Racz is not accepting new studen'ts until further notice.
Current
Research Interests
Main areas
of research and expertise are related to the reactions and
fate of various elements in soil as related to land productivity,
sustainability and food quality. Studies include:
- Reactions,
mobility and fate of nitrogen and phosphorus. The solid
phases formed and surface reactions between phosphorus and
soil constituents and the phytoavailability of soil and
fertilizer phosphorous as affected by soil characteristics
and environmental conditions have been a major focus of
study. The effect of placement, time of application, form
of nitrogen fertilizer and use of inhibitors on mobility
and phytoavailability of nitrogen fertilizers on various
soil types is currently under investigation.
- Reactions
and phytoavailability of minor elements. The precipitation
and adsorption reactions of elements such as zinc and copper
with soil constituents such as the iron and aluminum oxides
and the phytoavailability of these elements as affected
by various plant and soil factors are elucidated.
- Fate
and bioavailability of heavy metals. The fate of bioavailability
of heavy metals, particularly cadmium, from indigenous and
anthropogenic sources and effect on food quality is being
studied.
