Andrea Kraj, a Mechanical Engineering graduate of the University of Manitoba, has toured Denmark, Egypt, China and Brazil as one of eight people chosen from around the world to participate in the inaugural World Wind Energy Institute.
Kraj’s Masters Thesis was on "Icing Characteristics and Mitigation Strategies for Wind Turbines in Cold Climates" and dealt with experimental research of how ice forms on the blades of wind turbines and how we can prevent or delay this from occurring, for optimal and safe power generation. While presenting her research around the world last year, she won "Best Paper" at the Renewable Energy Conference in Japan.
