Inpatient Service (SBGH)

Program Overview

The Inpatient units at St. Boniface General Hospital are situated on the second and third floors of the McEwen Building, with 15 acute beds on each floor. The McEwen Building is connected to the main hospital by a tunnel and sits on riverside property.

We are a general adult inpatient psychiatric service, providing care for individuals with a wide array of disorders, predominantly mood and psychotic disorders. Our approach is short-term assessment and stabilization, preparing individuals for continuing recovery in the community. We emphasize contact and liaison with existing community resources. We are a multidisciplinary team with active participation from general medical, occupational therapy, social work, recreation therapy, community-liaison team. We are supported by a full range of specialty consultative and diagnostic services in a tertiary-care setting.

Clinical teaching is a core function and students from a variety of disciplines rotate through our service. There are five psychiatrists, all involved in teaching, one resident, and five medical students. The resident assumes the role of training psychiatrist and also gains experience teaching and supervising medical students. Senior electives are also offered whereby the resident can assume the role of junior attending psychiatrist.
