Lieutenant Colonel (LCol) Carl Walker (Center Right), Commanding Officer of Health Support Services (HSS) at Camp Julien in Kabul, Afghanistan, speaks with Professor Dr. Ali Shiragh [Cheragh Ali] (Center Left), Chancellor of Medical Sciences at the Kabul Medical Institute. LCol Walker presented the Institute with a donation of medical books donated from all over North America, through the efforts of the Manitoba Medical Students Association, the University of Manitoba and Login Canada, a Winnipeg-based company. The project to acquire and donate the books began in the fall of 2003. The final delivery of the medical library was completed today with the assistance of the Canadian Forces Health Support Services unit currently serving in Afghanistan under the National Command Element of Task Force Kabul. Task Force Kabul is part of the Canadian contribution to the NATO led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF). The role of ISAF in Afghanistan is to provide security and stability for the city of Kabul, as well as assist the interim government of the Afghan Transitional Authority. Press Release (1.2 MB)

Update, December 28, 2003: Dr. John Richards, Director, American Institute of Afghanistan Studies, Duke University, has called a meeting at Duke for February 6, 2003, to plan restoration of the Kabul University Library. Kevin Warrian has established a web page for coordinating medical book donations.. See http://members.shaw.ca/kabulmedbooks/kabullibrary.htm. A fund raising Symposium on the Medical Education Needs of Afghanistan is planned for March, 2004 at the University of Manitoba.

Update, November 16, 2003: Atifa and Mahila are both presently in Afghanistan. The Manitoba Medical Students Association (MMSA) has taken on the task of collecting books, transportation and funds for a core medical library, mobilizing medical students across Canada. We have formed a Winnipeg centered Committee to Restore the Kabul University Library, working in close cooperation with Dr. Maliha Zulfacar, Liaison to the Afghanistan Minister of Higher Education: http://afghanhighered.lib.calpoly.edu/. Our priorities right now are:

GRADUATE COURSE

Reverse Engineering the Embryo (3) . The basic question addressed in this course is: how does an embryo build itself? Issues to be discussed in this highly interdisciplinary course include the mechanics of the genome, tissue engineering, stem cells, cloning, and artificial life. No biological or engineering background will be assumed, though some will be taught as needed. Students will prepare two 15-20 page review articles on two specific topics, give talks on them, and will be asked to report briefly each week on single papers they find interesting.. There will be no exams. Grading will be based on written and oral reports, and participation.
