STANFORD HEART SPECIALIST PROMOTES "TOTAL COMMUNITY APPROACH" IN HEART HEALTH

MEDIA CENTRAL TO COST EFFECTIVE HEART HEALTH EDUCATION

Winnipeg, June 2, 1999 - The International Conference on Diabetes and Cardiovascular Disease is very pleased to welcome one of the pioneers in preventive medicine, Dr. John Farquhar, Director of the Stanford Wellness Centre. The Centre is world renowned for its advocacy of health promotion and health education resources.

Dr. Farquhar's ground-breaking Study in 1971 showed that health education through the media could be very effective in reducing risk for all segments of the population at a relatively low cost. The Stanford projects set the model for programs of this type. The World Health Organization now supports more than 30 similar health education projects in Europe and 13 countries outside of Europe.

As a key player in promoting a "total community approach" to preventing and controlling heart disease and stroke, Dr. Farquhar, a heart specialist, chaired the writing of the Victoria Declaration on Heart Health. This declaration is the definitive international guide for the promotion of heart healthy public policy. Dr. Farquhar also chairs the international 33-member Victoria Declaration Implementation Group.

Dr. Farquhar will be presenting at the ICDCD on Saturday , June 5, 1999 8:00. - 10:00 a.m. at the Winnipeg Convention Centre.

The International Conference on Diabetes and Cardiovascular Disease is being chaired by Dr. Aubie Angel, President of the Diabetes Research and Treatment Centre in Winnipeg, and Dr. Narjanan S. Dhalla, Director of the Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences.
