PUBLIC FORUM OFFERS NEW INSIGHT TO FAMILY AND PATIENTS

Winnipeg, June 3, 1999 - The International Conference on Diabetes and Cardiovascular Disease has attracted approximately 300 delegates from around the world to Winnipeg to share information and research study results. Because the area of preventative medicine is of great importance in promoting health and reducing risks, the conference is please to invite the public to come to a free public forum on Saturday, June 5th. The forum will be moderated by Diana Swain, anchor of CBC 24 Hours News.

1:30 - 3:30 p.m.

The public forum will bring together leading scientists with members of the public to discuss key issues on coping with cardiovascular disease and diabetes at the community level. Questions from the public are encouraged.

The speakers at the forum are: Erica Froelicher, Professor of Physiological Nursing, University of California; Michael Stern, Professor of Medicine and Epidemiology, Southwestern University of Texas; Sara Meltzer, Professor of Medicine, McGill University; and Robert Hegle, Professor of Medicine, University of Western Ontario.

The topics the forum will explore include:

  • Gestational Diabetes and its outcomes
  • Benefits of physical activity
  • Diabetes and cardiovascular disease in ethnic groups
  • Communities at risk: genes or environment

The International Conference on Diabetes and Cardiovascular Disease is being chaired by Dr. Aubie Angel, President of the Diabetes Research and Treatment Centre in Winnipeg, and Dr. Narjanan S. Dhalla, Director of the Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences.
