Manitoba Student Earns Gold At Canadian Skills Competition

Chris Friesen

Chris Friesen, a Production Art student at Winnipeg Technical College, carried home the Gold Medal in the 5th Annual Skills Canada competition recently held in Kitchener, Ontario. Chris was one of eight Winnipeg Technical College students to earn medals as Manitoba finished 2nd overall to Ontario. Manitoba took home as many medals as B.C., Alberta and Saskatchewan combined. "It was a thrill of a lifetime winning the gold medal for Manitoba," said Friesen. "Although the gold was an individual award, the support from the instructors and students at Winnipeg Tech gave me the confidence to go for it," added Friesen. Cindy Feduniw, Production Art Instructor at Winnipeg Technical College, says that she was confident Chris would impress the judges at the competition. "Chris has been in the Production Art Program for two years and has always displayed extraordinary creative abilities," says Feduniw. "It is his work ethic and ability to learn the technical aspects of design that contributed to his winning the gold medal," added Feduniw. "We are proud of all of our students who participated at the Skills Canada competition," said Leonard Harapiak, Director of Winnipeg Technical College. "Our instructors focus on teaching those skills that will be most relevant to the student in the work force. I think this ‘job-ready' philosophy combined with the students own abilities contributed to winning such a large number of medals," added Harapiak. The Winnipeg Technical College medal winners were; Gold - Chris Friesen, Production Art; Silver - Sheryl Juskow, Cosmetology; Bronze - John Ramshaw, Electronics; Bronze - Joel Arbez, Production Art; Bronze, Mark Pardoski, Welding; Bronze - (team award) Bobby De Thomasis, Industrial Maintenance Technician; Christian Perron, Technical Drafting; and Li- Chiao Yeh, Machining. Winnipeg Technical College is a public institution committed to providing training to secondary and post-secondary learners with a strong focus on transition to employment. Programs provide training in a wide variety of sectors including information technology, manufacturing and health care.
