Zhang Wei was bom in Longkou City, Shandong Province. In 1980, he graduated from the Chinese Department at Yantai Normal College. Three years later, Zhang became member of Chinese Writers'Association. He serves at present as associate chair of Shandong Writers' Association and the Young Writers' Association in Shandong Province.
Since 1980, Zhang has published a large number of literary works. His novel, The Ancient Boat, drew immediate critical attention. Quite a few of his books have won prestigious literary awards in China. His essay, "Blending into the Untamed Land", is used as the epilogue of his most recent novel September's Tales. The novel's independent, yet related seven chapters tell stories about a small town by the sea and its townspeople, their roots, their lives, and their passions.
