ABOVE: In these two photographs (c. 1940s) FitzGerald is looking at a book which includes a reproduction of a painting by Cezanne of Victor Choquet, a minor government official and an early collector of impressionist painting. The Choquet painting was done in the 1870s. FitzGerald was an enthusiastic student of Cezanne's mature style. Note that in the photograph above FitzGerald has reversed the negative for the final print. In Cezanne's original painting, Choquet looks to the right not the left, as seen in the photograph below.
