THE OTHER SIDE OF THE LANDSCAPE NO. 6, 1990 McEwen had not employed a predominant white – pursuing in ever-greater depth his first experiments of 1955 - so intensely since the 1975-1976 paintings entitled The Gardens of Daybreak (below). The Millstones and Garden of Frost series already embodied the basic components of his pictorial vocabulary, which has since progressed in a circular movement.
