Last words of wisdom (2009)...
It's been a another successful year for all of us at UMMA, with many new initiatives launched, and many events that our members came out to. Soon, an all-new executive team will be running things at UMMA, and it looks to be another exciting year coming up..
As your Director of Communications over the past year, I would like to leave you with an example of marketing in action, since that is what this club is all about... While this is more satirical in nature, it's still a worthwhile example to explore:
Recently, we've all heard in the news how the Phoenix Coyotes went into bankruptcy, and are likely to be moved to Hamilton or sold in some other fashion. Now...to all of us, a team that has lost hundreds of millions of dollars in a desert city suggests that nobody really cares about NHL hockey in Phoenix. I decided to mock this situation on all cylinders, initially creating a simplistic gag of the situation, but soon expanding that idea into a fake campaign to save the Phoenix Coyotes, utilizing a Facebook group, YouTube channel, and domain name.
Effectively, I lured people onto a fake website, making fun of the idea of keeping the team in Phoenix, and utilized this gag to promote my own properties. Worth it.
Marketing can be very effective in getting your message to your audience, and with a little bit of creativity and a sense of what is going on in your world, you may be able to hit one out of the park.
Best of luck to UMMA in 2009-10!
