< > ABOVE: Wanda Koop (Canadian, b. 1951), Sightline (orange line), 2000, acrylic on canvas, Collection of Gallery One One One, School of Art, University of Manitoba, Winnipeg, Gift of the Artist. Acc. No.: 04.058 Wanda Koop is one of Canada's most distinguished and inventive artists. In 1973 she received a Diploma in Fine Art from the University of Manitoba School of Art, and since then her painting and video career has spanned three decades and included over 50 solo exhibitions. She is the recipient of national and international awards such as the Canada Council "A" Grant, the Paris Studio, the Japan Fund Award and the Manitoba Arts Council "A" Grant. In 2002, she received a Doctor of Letters from the University of Winnipeg and the Queen's Golden Jubilee Medal. She is the founder of Art City, a storefront art centre that gives youth at risk the opportunity to work with contemporary artists. Recently, TIME Magazine listed Wanda as one of Canada's best artists, along with Janet Cardiff, Jeff Wall and Michael Snow. In 2006, Koop was invested with the Order of Canada. Sightline (orange line) is part of the Sightlines series that explores memory and landscape. The familiar, yet fabricated landscapes are framed by technological borders changing the optics of the view evoking many emotional reactions. Koop states: "Sightline evokes the way electronic technologies are a particular condition of the way we now read the world around us, even the natural world." The series is an extensive exploration of this theme with over 100 pieces that took Koop five years to create. BOND, DYCK, KOOP, THORNEYCROFT 26 October 2006 - 5 January 2007.
