New Research Centres Open

The Internet Innovation Centre (IIC) was established in May 1999 to promote cooperation, coordination and communication within and between academia, industry and government regarding the development of internet applications at the University of Manitoba. This world-class research centre will be a hub of information and telecommunication research. Participating university groups include the industry liaison office, distance education, anthropology, graduate studies and physics.

The Centre for Research and Treatment of Atherosclerosis officially opened at the Basic Medical Sciences Building on the Bannatyne Campus in July 1999. Funding for the centre was provided by Federated Insurance, a Winnipeg-based company, and the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba. The centre’s focus is to study the risk factors associated with artherosclerosis, a vascular disease that involves the thickening and hardening of arteries due to a build-up of cholesterol and other substances. Patrick Choy, biochemistry and medical genetics, directs the centre which includes an active research lab and a clinic to treat patients. The official opening of the Centre for Hellenic Civilization took place in November 1999 at University College. The centre, under the direction of Michael Cosmopoulos, classics, seeks to develop and sustain research, teaching and public education on Hellenism, with particular emphasis on the infl uence of ancient, medieval and modern Hellenic civilization on contemporary society.
