1999 Pan American Games

The University of Manitoba played a significant cant role in the hosting of the XIII Pan American Games in 1999. The Fort Garry campus was the site of the largest athletes' Village at the Games, housing 3,500 athletes from 24 countries in the Tache and Mary Speechly Hall, St John's, St. Andrew's and University College residences as well as the new Helen Glass Centre for Nursing which was used as a dormitory during the Games.

Roller sports (hockey and artistic), volleyball and basketball preliminaries, athletics and rhythmic gymnastics competitions were held at the university in three sport venues: Max Bell Centre, University Stadium and the Investors Group Athletic Centre.

Playing host to the Games and to a visit from Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal, individuals from numerous departments pulled together as a team to ensure the comfort, safety and overall enjoyment of the many athletes and visitors to campus.
