Donors Invest in International and Business Trade Law

Israel Asper, founder of CanWest Global Communication, donated $2 million through the Asper Foundation to establish The Asper Chair in International Business and Trade Law in the Faculty of Law in partnership with the Faculty of Management.

The Asper Chair was filled by Bryan Schwartz, a professor of law who has distinguished himself in this area. The donation will allow for the addition of two new courses, upgrades to equipment and library material and will create opportunities to bring in guest speakers and to attend conferences.

Marcel Desautels, founder and chairman of the Canadian Credit Management Foundation (CCMF) donated $500,000 in support of the Chair.

$200,000 of the CCMF's gift has gone towards an internship program which will allow up to four students a year to work with the Asper Chair in International Business and Trade Law. The foundation's contribution towards this program was matched dollar for dollar by the Manitoba Scholarship and Bursary Initiative, for a total endowed fund of $400,000. The CCMF has also endowed a $300,000 fund to support prestigious bi-annual academic conferences in business and trade law.
