University 1 Helps Students Get Oriented

All new students entering University 1 (U1) were introduced to the school at Start@U1 information sessions. These sessions, held in June and July, provided a brief introduction to the university, covering everything from admission requirements to telephone registration.

At the information session, students were given a START book to help them plan to register for courses for the first time. During their first year, students received three newsletters containing timely information on topics such as voluntary withdrawals, university rules and regulations, improving study skills, and planning for a career.

Established in 1998 as the U of M’s new approach to first year studies, U1, continued to be an enormous success this year. The program allows students the flexibility to move straight toward their intended field of study or to test different fields to find the one most suited to their interests.

U Fact: The three founding colleges at the University of Manitoba were St. John’s College, St. Boniface College (now called Collège universitaire de Saint-Boniface), and Manitoba College (now the University of Winnipeg).
