Teaching
Awards Honour Professors
At
the spring and fall convocations, four professors were honoured
with university teaching awards. All were described by nominating
students as “the best” professors they had during their years at
the U of M. The Dr. and Mrs. H.H. Saunderson Award for excellence
in teaching was shared by two professors:
Thomas
Berry, mathematics, was praised by students for his ability
to make diffi cult material in mathematics interesting and compelling.
Students cited his “contagious enthusiasm for the subject,” as well
as his “motivating” lectures. He is known for coming to class early
to put a cartoon on the overhead projector so that he is assured
of having the students’ attention as soon as class begins. Berry
teaches courses in applied fi nite math, applied calculus and advanced
calculus and vector analysis. He began teaching at the U of M in
1974.
Charles
Tax, accounting and finance, earned accolades for his commitment
to students, who said “he attends extracurricular activities” and
“puts a lot of care and work into his assignments.” Students also
appreciated his breadth of knowledge in the subjects he teaches,
which include assets, equities, and financial statement analysis.
Tax has been with the U of M since 1975.
