Alexander J. Wall

I am currently the technologist responsible for the operations of the Hydraulics Research & Testing Facility at the University of Manitoba's Faculty of Engineering. At this facility applied research is carried out to further understand open channel hydraulics and hydrology in a lab setting. Field work spanning over several different research projects is also conducted to accurately model water resources and apply lab findings to the real world.

I completed my Bachelor of Science degree in environmental science at the University of Winnipeg and my Civil/CAD technologist diploma at Red River Community College. My background in water resources began working for the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) at the Experimental Lakes Area focusing on fish behaviour research in the field and lab. While at DFO the multi-disciplinary experience I gained allowed me to branch out and guided my interests to focus more directly on water resources research, specifically hydrology and open channel hydraulics, which gave me the opportunity to work at the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Manitoba.

Over the past 20+ years, I have been employed at the University of Manitoba in various departments, most recently in Civil Engineering working with the Water Resources group as an office assistant since 2011.

A typical day at the office for me includes a variety of duties, including maintaining financial records and budget reports, processing appointment forms, making conference travel arrangements, purchasing office equipment, arranging meetings, registering staff and students for events and conferences, and last (but certainly not least!) water isotope data entry.

I live on a family farm in the Red River Valley with my husband and two daughters.  In the summer months, yardwork/gardening/canning keeps me more than busy!  Winters usually include a trip to Phoenix for a few weeks, where I try to watch as many pre-season MLB games as possible!  I enjoyed many years of coaching volleyball and softball, and now that my daughters are both in University, my hobbies have become quieter – to include quilting, crocheting, and reading… I assume this calmness comes with age.   Music (ALL music) is a very large part of my life as well.

I'm now in my 17th year with the University of Manitoba. I spent a brief period working in Civil Engineering in 2003.  I'm happy to be back in Engineering, and began working as the IRC Research Coordinator for Dr. Shawn Clark in December 2015.  My main duties are finance, purchasing, website development and travel coordination.

On a personal note, I enjoy summers at the cabin with my family, travelling, bartending at hockey games and concerts, golfing, zumba and adding and subtracting to my bucket list!
