Biography

Charles Mossman was a professor of finance at the I.H. Asper School of Business from 1990 until his retirement in 2013, and now continues as a Senior Scholar.  From 1997 to 1998 he was Acting Head of the Accounting and Finance Department, during which he revised the accounting program.  From 2004 to 2009, Charles was Associate Dean for the Asper School.  During that period, at different times he held responsibility for undergraduate, MBA, MSc and PhD programs, and general university administration. A major task during the last two years of his appointment was updating the Asper School’s programs and developing a report to maintain the School’s AACSB accreditation.  Charles assembled a strong team and initiated a number of new practices.  The Asper School’s accreditation was renewed for another five years in 2009.

Teaching has been primarily in the areas of corporate financial strategy and corporate finance in the Commerce and MBA programs, and investments and financial markets in the Asper doctoral program.  Charles has enjoyed coaching a variety of student finance teams to national competitions.

Research has been primarily in investments, including empirical tests of bankruptcy prediction and market anomalies.  Charles also writes business cases for teaching corporate finance and financial management.  He has participated as chair or member of a number of research advisory committees for doctoral or masters students. Two of his doctoral graduates teach at other Canadian universities.

University service has included membership in Senate and several other university committees, including the Senate Committee on Academic Appeals, Senate Committee on Admissions, Staff Benefits Committee and the Agricultural Economics and Agribusiness Program Advisory Committee.  Within the Asper School, Charles has chaired and been a member of tenure and promotion committees, and has served on a variety of program and administrative committees as a member or chair. He has also participated in departmental curriculum, research, and recruiting committees as needed.

From 2003-2006 Charles served as an officer in the Case Track at the Administrative Science Association of Canada Conference and later as the Canadian representative on the board of the North American Case Research Association.  From 2007-2010 he served on the board of the University Club at the University of Manitoba.

Charles has degrees from Royal Military College (BA-Honours Economics), Queen’s University (MBA) and the University of Western Ontario (PhD in Finance).  Before becoming an academic, he had considerable previous experience in accounting and financial management.  He served as a Finance Officer in the Canadian Forces, stationed in Calgary and Victoria.  He supervised payroll, accounting, and budgeting functions, and his service included a tour as Comptroller of the Canadian Contingent in Cyprus with the United Nations.  Later, as a Senior Accountant and Financial Analyst in the oil industry in Calgary and Toronto, he reported financial results, supervised accounting staff, and developed a cash forecasting system at Gulf Canada and Petro Canada.

Charles obtained his CGA in 1979.  When he moved to Winnipeg in 2000 he began lecturing Finance II for CGA Manitoba, and this has continued for twenty years.  He has served extensively in various educational and administrative positions with CGA Manitoba and CGA Canada. During 2010 he also completed examination and professional requirements to be awarded the Chartered Financial Analyst designation.  This allows him to assist Asper students with scholarships to begin their participation in this excellent finance program.

Charles’ honours and awards have included an Award of Merit from CGA Manitoba in 2002, recognition as a Fellow of the Certified General Accountants Association of Canada in 2003 and a CGA Manitoba Pinnacle Award in 2010. He also received an Associates Award for service at the Asper School of Business in 2008.

From March to November, 2011, Charles served as Acting Dean of the Asper School.  With the strong support of the Deans’ office, faculty and staff, he worked to maintain the positive momentum of our academic programs and research until our new Dean took over.
