Alternative Environment Activities in Physical Education: Challenging Traditional Spaces and Practices Through Research-Informed Pedagogy

Dr. Nathan Hall is an Associate Professor of Physical Education and Kinesiology at Brock University. Dr. Hall is interested in the content delivered in physical education programs and the benefits of introducing children to a wide variety of activities that can promote physical health and well-being across the lifespan.

Dr. Hall will be presenting on the importance of physical education (PE) teachers embracement of alternative enviroment activities (AEA), provides several specific practical examples for PE teachers looking to enhance AEA inclusion in their PE programs, and concludes with practical strategies to help overcome common PE teacher-cited barriers related to embracing AEAs.

Danielle Bouchard, a professor at the University of New Brunswick Faculty of Kinesiology, is an an author, editor and researcher whose work explores identifying and testing the potential health benefits of exercise programs for inactive individuals who are becoming regular exercisers.

Dr. Bouchard will be presenting on new collaborations, methods and research designs to increase the impact of her research, which has focused on testing interventions to show the functional benefits of sitting less and moving more.

Moss Norman, an associate professor in the University of British Columbia's School of Kinesiology, will present about the recent research revealing a profound lack of racial diversity at the faculty level throughout Canadian kinesiology and physical education programs and the culture of Eurocentrism and Whiteness in teaching and research.

Moss Norman's scholarship falls within the broad disciplinary area of the socio-cultural study of sport and physical activity, with a research emphasis on men, masculinity and the body.

Hypothermia, Drowning, and Cold-Water Survival

Join RADM (RET) Alan M. Steinman, MD, MPH, as he discusses the factors affecting survival in cold water. He will also presents the results of a unique study comparing the effects of immersion in calm vs rough water for survivors wearing different types of protective clothing while either immersed in water or while sitting atop a capsized boat exposed to wind, waves, and spray.
