Research summary

Dr. Helewa’s current research interests lie in improving the quality of care and outcomes for patients who suffer from colorectal cancer through the use of large administrative databases. He also participates in research looking at optimizing endoscopy care for patients diagnosed with colorectal neoplasms. Furthermore, he is involved in clinical trials for patients diagnosed with rectal cancer through CancerCare Manitoba.

Biography

Dr. Ramzi Helewa completed medical school at UM followed by residency in general surgery at the university. During his residency, he also completed a master’s degree in surgery with a focus on quality of care of colorectal cancer therapy in Manitoba. He then completed the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada accredited Colon and Rectal Surgery Fellowship program at the University of Ottawa. During his training at the University of Ottawa, he also attended the Telfer School of Management, enrolled in Improving Quality and Patient Safety: The Physician Leadership Program.

Dr. Helewa joined the surgery department in 2016 with an appointment at St. Boniface Hospital. He is a colorectal surgeon, endoscopist and general surgeon with a special interest in minimally invasive techniques for rectal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, and transanal endoscopic microsurgery (TEM).
