Mayara Bastos, MD, MSc, PhD

Dr. Bastos's research focuses on tuberculosis and tuberculosis preventive therapy, with the goal of identifying safer, shorter, and more effective regimens and understanding their adverse events. Her expertise spans evidence synthesis, epidemiological studies, and clinical trials.

She leads an international individual participant data network meta-analysis of tuberculosis preventive therapy regimens, drawing on 27 randomized trials and over 40,000 participants across 24 countries, and serves as co-site principal investigator for the SSTaRLeT trial evaluating shortened TB preventive therapy.

She has published more than 40 peer-reviewed papers. She collaborates on CIHR-funded grants and has contributed to WHO and ATS/CDC/ERS/IDSA tuberculosis clinical practice guidelines.

Dr. Mayara Bastos is an infectious diseases specialist with a focus on tuberculosis, HIV and tuberculosis infection. She received her medical degree in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 2013, and completed her residency in infectious diseases at the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro from 2014 to 2017.

During this time, she also completed a Master of Science in Medicine at the same institution. Dr. Bastos pursued her PhD in epidemiology jointly at the Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro and McGill University from 2017 to 2021, followed by a postdoctoral fellowship at the Faculty of Medicine, McGill University, from 2021 to 2023, under the supervision of Dr. Dick Menzies. She subsequently completed a residency in family medicine at the University of Manitoba from 2023 to 2025, followed by a practice-ready assessment in infectious diseases at the same institution.

In 2026, Dr. Bastos joined the Rady Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Manitoba as Assistant Professor in the Section of Infectious Diseases, with a joint appointment in the Department of Internal Medicine and the Department of Medical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases. She also holds an Affiliate Membership with the McGill International Tuberculosis Centre.

In 2026, Dr. Bastos joined the Rady Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Manitoba as an assistant professor in the Section of Infectious Diseases, with a joint appointment in the Department of Internal Medicine and the Department of Medical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases.
