Dr. Manji’s research focusses on outcome studies in patients post cardiac surgery including those with prolonged length of stay, heparin induced thrombocytopenia and seizures using a large clinical and administrative database.
Dr. Manji also does basic science research looking at the role of the immune response in the failure of bioprosthetic heart valves and the role of the immune response in causing aortic stenosis.
He has also done research work related to cardiovascular disease in low-middle income countries.
His interests include cognitive overload/brain biology leading to medical error and burnout.

Dr. Manji completed his MD, PhD and cardiac surgery training at the University of Alberta followed by his critical care training and MBA at UM. Dr. Manji practices critical care medicine and does research in the areas mentioned under research summary. Dr. Manji is part of the surgery department’s quality improvement/innovation and implementation committee and also serves as a reviewer for many journals as well as grant committees.
